ANA’s story
Ana Llorente was born and raised in Havana City, Cuba. From a very young age, she developed a deep passion for dance, taking her first steps at the age of 6. Coming from a family of musicians, composers, dancers, teachers, and choreographers, Ana found unconditional support in her parents, which has been fundamental to her artistic career.
Her childhood was marked by the Latin and Afro-Cuban music that resonated in the neighborhoods and by attending theaters and cultural activities with her mother. The musical influence in her grandparents’ home, with instruments like the trumpet, saxophone, and piano, further enriched her education.
At the age of 8, her father, who worked at the National Institute of Radio and Television, took her to his workplace. There, one of the principal dancers of the Television Ballet Company saw her dancing outside the building and insisted her father to take her to Ballet school. This led to her first audition, which she passed, and began her training at the National Ballet School, where she studied intensively full-time for five years.
At the age of 15, after making tough decisions and with much sacrifice, Ana transitioned to the pre-professional level at the National School of Modern/Contemporary Dance and Folklore. It was there that she took her first steps as a Choreographer, creating and performing her own choreographies. Her education in Cuba was comprehensive, covering Dance, Acting, Singing, Piano, Music Theory, Languages, Art History, Painting, Choreographic composition, Ballet, Cuban and International folklore, Character dances, Cuban popular dances, Philosophy, Pedagogy, Dance Methodology and Pedagogy , Kinesiology, other disciplines, including Stagecraft, Technical Theater production, Makeup artistry, and more.
Ana was invited to compete in the most important National invitational competition for Dance school students and joined the eminent Cuban choreographer Rosario Cárdenas, who became her mentor. This choreographic experimentation in the National Modern Dance Company was crucial for her development. In her final year of studies, the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba awarded her a National Prize as a Choreographer and Dancer, and she was selected for a Youth Choreographers’ Scholarship at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA.
